Fire & Water: In Pictures
Feargus Callagy, 37, in Sharm El Sheikh. Feargus is Ireland’s leading freediver, and he attempted a 50m dive in Egypt this May. ‘Fire & Water’ is a Radio One documentary following the Sligo man as he introduces this strange sport to Ireland.
Feargus dives down one of the freediving lines in the Red Sea. The lines help orient the divers when they descend, and are set to depths of up to 60m.
The Manta Ray that Feargus swam with and photographed in the documentary. It measures roughly seven feet across. Picture by Uwe Kiehl.
Freedivers ascend to the surface using an airbag, after descending on a weighted sled. The technique saves energy both ways, allowing for deeper dives. Picture by Uwe Kiehl.
Feargus surfaces after a dive at Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo. The eight-degree water temperatures in April were rather colder than the Red Sea in May!
