What’s Hot: New Year’s Eve in Dublin

New Year’s Eve in Dublin isn’t just a night out. It’s a three-day festival.

Sunday, December 29:

The Gathering at Leopardstown: The final day of the Christmas festival races is also the first of The Gathering’s NYE celebrations. Highlights include the Ryanair Hurdle (Ryanair passengers travelling to Ireland over Christmas can buy two tickets for the price of one to the races on its website), and a concert from Mary Black and Finbar Fury. Tickets: €25/€15. First race: 12.15.

Monday, December 30:

Love Dublin Day: Free arts, culture and music events include 34 bands and acts playing in coffee shops, bookstores and restaurants around the city. Venues include the Stag’s head, Brother Hubbard, the Powerscourt Centre and The Gutter Bookshop. Other events include a Leviathan political cabaret at Twisted Pepper, and New Year’s Thieves (see below).

New Year’s Thieves: An alternative New Year’s event at The Sugar Club, the idea being to have a chilled night on Dec 30 rather than a hectic one on Dec 31 (with no cabs, tables and super-expensive babysitters). It kicks off with a screening of The Apartment, the 1960s classic with Jack Lemon, and acts like Lisa O’Neill & Donal Dineen. There’s pop-up artisan food from Gruel Guerilla too. 6.30-late, €20; thesugarclub.com.

Tuesday, December 31:

The People’s Procession of Light:A sort of Ultimate Gathering marking the final moments of Ireland’s unique year. Families are invited to join performers with a lantern-walk through the city centre.

Countdown Concert (€25): Advance booking is required for a fab street-party featuring Ska superheroes Madness, The Strypes and singer songwriter Ryan Sheridan, bang in the middle of the city (they’ve even got 3D Projections planned for the front of Trinity College). Book at 3nyedublin.ie.

Wednesday, January 1:

The Big Brunch: After New Year’s Eve in Dublin, join the big breakfast from 11am in Meeting House Square, with live music, kids’ entertainment, food stalls and performances complementing the grub. Don’t forget to write down your New Year’s resolution on the Resolution Tree…
